It takes original thinking to fight for Nature's well being with starting a brand of sustainable sportswear called SueMe... which sparks off an array of reactions...
which is exactly what pure fashionistas aim to create...
and definitely sparks an interest to work hard for the right cause...
A challenge to help the next generation remember the good old days... :-)

EthiCat- Factory off-cuts

So I did not get the job to coordinate textile charity projects-- and yes the lease extension will cost 40K plus fees on both sides, just when I would have wished to dent my mortgage...

however, there is always more to look forward to and enjoy, like making the new SUEME gilet with wool off-cuts picked up from Tottenham factory in 2015 after Echoic mini production..

And when good friend asks why I make the gilet myself I ask: who is going to cut small pieces? Factories like to lay the whole length, and who will match the checks?
Plus I love the traditional hand making process mixing UK wool and Millerain to create a hybrid modern yet vintage looking over garment to satisfy active men on the go, yet stylish... leisurewear revisited...

3- The rag trade...

Where do new people who try something a little different stand? fit in?
Constructing collar with hand written wording

For instance SUEME sustainable sportswear / activewear concept brand is introducing a Gilet
- designed in 2013 - sourced for materials over 3 years -  now graded to measure, cut and made in North London SueMe creative studio for clients, one at a time...
Hand cutting XXL for Rod

It is not Savile Row yet it resembles it with the level of crafmanship and direct business to person approach
It is not Barbour yet it resembles it by the choice of iconic British Millerain, and look which could pass for a hunter's outfit, yet incorporates modern features such as reflective piping ...

It is a new hybrid - serie speciale- gilet for active modern men on the go who can dress up or down yet can be presentable at an event or enjoy the extra layer on a bike...complimenting the Echoic jacket and under layer Line jacket all made with recycled plastic bottles, coupling traditional "couture and tailoring" slow paced know-how with modern ultrasonic seaming technologies...
Hand Crafting every piece and detail

So what is it? Can anyone help?
And how can we price this one off item crafted by hand from concept to finished product?

Who to Trust Then?

When most Brands' Names appeal to our sense of Trust to make that first purchase...
or sense of travel, adventure, dream... just a few letters to make you indulge in your fantasies...
or luxury... being made to feel above others by special buying powers...

What about what goes into the brand, the ingredients, the workforce treatment, the creativity,
and above all the legacy to our planet and future generations?

Does this also come into a few letters of short lived fantasy?

Then "SueMe" might not "fit"into the reassuring fantasy: it will make you feel on edge...
Thinking: why do I need to be provoked into Action?

Actually, we feel Creativity needs to be triggered into action every day:

Tuesday19 Feb: first new sample finished- XXL special Gilet Order for Rod is measured
Thursday21-Friday22 Patterns for XXL/Rod and XL/Mark are cut
Monday25- Cloth is cut for XXL GILET
Tuesday26- Rod's GILET is made and ready... for ACTION---

Sourcing - Design- Pattern - Grades - Making- Crafting-
That is the SueMe Promise,
Slow Lasting Styles, made only for you with special ingredients:
UK made Wool, UK waxed Cotton, Recycled plastic YKK zips, Upcycled lining
Craftmanship and accents of reflective pockets and back yoke piping from France...
A gathering of nations and skills for one purpose ONLY...

Denim Blues...

So from walking in the High Street, which in Central London would be Oxford Street,
one can spot hues of blues and themes around Denim, at H&M,
G-star...
And M&S spread on front and cover pages of the Metro Yesterday...
SO Denim is not Dead
but at this rate- if we do not act fast-

our planet might soon be...
DENIM is DIRTY

Children FIRST Denim SECOND

When looking at children's drawings one can see their sense of hope and optimism intact,
as a natural expression of the innate positive human spirit...

Caroline Lee from the Head Clinical Education Centre expressed how the human brain is wired to process positive thinking and is unable to process negative thinking, resulting in a shutting down of internal system, when negative thinking occurs...

It seems children do this (be positive thinkers) naturally sketching trees with buildings growing as leaves in representation of their natural habitat in an urban environment such as Broadwater Farm...

Yet a few years later, they start judging their drawings and say: "I can't draw"...

So we would like to draw inspiration from optimistic children to redress the world,
and today having met an amazing team at TRAID, a charity aiming to give clothes a longer life,
wondered if -
the denim industry could be the starting point of changing the industry for good...
Here is a rack of Jeans from TRAID - Turnpike Lane -  N22
Beautifully arranged in shades from washed to dark...

Denim production utilizes huge amounts of cotton, water, pesticides and chemicals, depleting our planet of major necessary ingredients required by humans on a daily basis to survive...

There is no other planet with such richness of life so far, that we know of,
so let's protect this gem instead of destroying it,

let's start emulate the positive human spirit of children
for them to continue growing with all their positive aspirations... in happier societies... globally...
THANK YOU TRAID

Made only...

When needed, required, for enjoyment, long life, multiple purposes...

These are the core SUEME VALUES for investing time and resources
into bringing new items on the already busy clothing market...

No need for more really, unless we have carefully reviewed the concept and worn the sample enough years for people to express their wish to wear one similar piece...

--  creating new styles which can FULLY fulfil a new purpose --

Size by size, graded today manually at the SueMe Studio in North London where,

after creating and finishing the making of the Gilet yesterday,

two friends of XL and XXL stature ordered it on the spot,
they were measured (on the spot too)
and soon will enjoy one of these gilets over the matching Echoic jacket

The first original version was created in 2014...  and worn since then,
tested all these years, as the difference in Millerain shades show here
the shoulder parts are made with same cloth, but one faded over the years,
giving it a nice worn "patine" look

... it took all these years to really decide there was a need for it...
so instead or ordering new wool, we decided to utilise off-cuts of Echoic Jacket production
to create a matching set, when worn over recycled plastic fleece layers
which breathe well and are sealed with ultrasonic seams to avoid extra layers
(as displayed here below): the black layer has just arrived from Scotland,
where it took 3 years to cut make and finish:
it is made out of NEWLIFE fibres recycled plastic from Italy
worth waiting for too... and not on the website yet...

This GILET is a classy yet modern versatile garment which can dress up or down
and serves well as a final layer with pockets
for those on the go who like to wear comfortable sporty garments of lasting quality
to suit their fast paced lifestyle...yet wishing to slow fashion down...

It is amazingly satisfying for a designer pattern cutter with a green conscience
to be part of a visionary entrepreneurs team and see a concept grow slowly over the years
and see how each new gilet brings so much fun and enjoyment...
THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT REAL...

Sustainability

Today was the amazing visit of Sustainable company SueMe in Potters Bar preparing sustainable workshops involving using fabrics from various sources and qualities to unleash the creative process: saving cloth from the landfill, learning how to design, sew and pattern cut from existing garments or from scratch... The classes are for all levels and can be arranged in suitable locations.
